Each figure lasts half as long as the previous one: a whole note equals 2 half notes, a half note 2 quarter notes, a quarter note 2 eighth notes, and so on.
A rest lasts as long as its figure. The whole rest hangs below the line and the half rest sits on top of it: same shape, told apart by their position on the staff.
